PBR Texture Workflow for Characters

Modern game engines use a Physically Based Rendering (PBR) pipeline. A complete character texture set includes four maps — missing any one degrades quality significantly.

What is a humanoid rig and why does it matter?+
A humanoid rig is a bone hierarchy that matches the proportions of a human skeleton — hips, spine, chest, shoulders, upper/lower arms, hands, fingers, neck, head, and legs down to the toes. Engines like Unity (Humanoid avatar) and Unreal (SK_Mannequin skeleton) define a standard bone naming convention. When your character's rig matches this convention, the engine can automatically retarget any animation — so a walk cycle built for one character can play correctly on any other humanoid character. Non-humanoid rigs (creatures, quadrupeds, vehicles) can still be rigged but require custom animation blueprints and won't benefit from automatic retargeting.
FBX vs GLB for character models — which should I buy?+
FBX is the safe default for Unity and Unreal: it preserves skin weights, blend shapes, embedded animation clips, and per-clip loop flags with maximum fidelity. How do I import a character FBX into Unity with the correct rig?+
