Modular terrain systems explained

OpenLOCK — the open standard

OpenLOCK is a free, open-source connector system published by Printosaurus. Tiles use a recessed bayonet slot that accepts small printed clip pieces. Any two creators who both follow the OpenLOCK spec produce tiles that physically connect. Clips are usually printed in flexible TPU filament or rigid PETG. Look for "OpenLOCK-compatible" in a listing's description.

Dragonlock — the locking-tab system

Dragonlock (Fat Dragon Games) uses interlocking tabs moulded into the tiles themselves — no separate clip pieces. Tiles click together firmly without tools and release cleanly when you pull them apart. This proprietary system offers quick setup and teardown at the table but is only compatible with Dragonlock-spec tiles from participating creators.

Standalone (no connector) — the simple choice

Many terrain creators design standalone tiles: flat-bottomed floor tiles and self-supporting wall pieces that sit on the table without any clip system. These are the easiest to print and mix-and-match from different creators. They rely on the table surface to hold them flat and are ideal if you store terrain flat in foam trays rather than building modular structures upward.

Painting 3D printed terrain

3D printed terrain paints the same as resin or plastic terrain kits. A typical workflow:
